Virginia Beach City Public Schools has four elementary schools operating on a year-round schedule: Seatack, Corporate Landing, Plaza, and Point O’View. Year-round school is instruction arranged over 12 months rather than the customary 10-month schedule most school divisions currently follow. Students are taught the identical curricula but receive instruction in 45-day blocks of learning, with vacations and intersessions of 5-15 days
distributed throughout the year. Year-round school represents a change in when students learn, not in what and how they learn. Parents have the opportunity to enroll their child in a year-round school even if their home school is not one of the school division’s four year-round elementary schools.
If you believe your child could benefit from the flexibility of a year-round calendar, you may want to consider enrolling him or her in one of these four schools for the 2008-2009 school year (which begins on July 21, 2008). To begin the process for consideration, please complete a Student Placement Request Form for Elementary School and return it to the year-round school of your choice. The Student Placement Request Form for Elementary School is available in every school.
The opportunity to attend a year-round school is extended first to students who attend the year-round schools’ partner schools, known as opt-out schools. Opt-out schools enroll children who are zoned for a year-round schedule, but whose parents and guardians prefer the traditional schedule. On the other hand, opt-out schools also allow their students to transfer out of their program into a year-round program, if that is the schedule their families prefer. The opt-out elementary schools are: Ocean Lakes for Corporate Landing; Brookwood for Plaza; Arrowhead and Kempsville Meadows for Point O’ View; and Birdneck for Seatack. In these cases, transportation for students is provided.
