Substitute Orientation Information Sessions
Information and Requirements

Teaching and Non-Teaching Positions

All substitute applicants are required to complete a Virginia Beach City Public Schools' employment application and attend an orientation session.

Details for specific employment categories are as follows:

Substitute CLASSIFIED Orientation employee categories include:

  1. Clerical
  2. Teacher Assistants
  3. Nurses
  4. Interpreters

Substitute classified orientation lasts approximately one and a half hours. This will include paperwork and training.

Substitute TEACHER Orientation employee categories include:

  1. Substitute Teachers
  2. Homebound Instruction
  3. SOL Tutors

Substitute teacher orientation sessions last approximately one and a half hours.

ALL substitutes, classified and teacher, will be required to complete the following:

  1. Virginia State Police fingerprint check and FBI fingerprint check;
  2. Social Services Child Protective Services Registry background.
  3. Tuberculosis screening certificate PDF Document.

ALL substitutes must bring to the orientation session documents verifying the right to work in the United States as required by the Immigration and Control Act. The list of acceptable documents is listed on the back of this page. Only ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS listed on the List of Acceptable Documents PDF Document will be accepted.

Substitute packets are distributed only at the orientation sessions. All requirements and procedures will be reviewed during the orientation sessions.

CUSTODIAL SUBSTITUTE APPLICANTS: Please contact the Office of Custodial Services at 757.490.8540 for specific instructions and to register for the next available orientation session.

FOOD SERVICES SUBSTITUTE APPLICANTS: Please contact the Department of Food Services at 757.263.1101 for specific instructions and to register for the next available orientation session.
