Applicant Process Checklist
(All Positions)

Thank you for your interest in Virginia Beach City Public Schools. In order to expedite your application, the following information should be submitted. Please note that delays in processing will result if your application is incomplete, lacks necessary documents, or if you do not provide names of professional references with accurate contact information. Carefully read the requirements for each category below.

1) Administrators:

  1. An unofficial transcript of all college level work is adequate for processing your application, however, an official transcript is required upon employment;
  2. At least three letters of reference;
  3. A copy of your educational license indicating an endorsement in administration or supervision, if applicable.

In order to be considered for an advertised position, an external candidate must:

Have a complete application on file in the Department of Human Resources (applications will be retained for approximately one year).

Whenever there is a specific administrative vacancy in which the external candidate is interested, they are requested to:

Submit a letter of interest by the closing date or as outlined in the vacancy posting ("blanket" or "generic" letters of interest will not be accepted or placed in application files).

For current employees who wish to be considered for an advertised position:

An active personnel file will suffice.

Current employees interested in a specific administrative vacancy must:

Submit a letter of interest by the closing date or as outlined in the vacancy posting. This letter of interest should include an updated resume to concisely state his/her qualifications and preparation for the posted position. Note that these requirements will be clearly defined in the vacancy posting.

2) Teachers:

  1. A copy of your placement file if currently attending school.
  2. If not in school, the following items:
    • Transcripts for all earned degrees;
    • Transcript(s) for all coursework (official transcript upon employment);
    • Copies of Professional Assessment scores (VCLA, VRA, Praxis II), if already completed;
    • References from those who have supervised your performance (can include a copy of most recent evaluation);
    • A copy of your teaching license; date
    • A written statement of Highly Qualified status from another state Department of Education or previous school division for experienced teachers
    • A resume (optional).
    • For your convenience, a Teacher Recruitment Kit is available.
  3. Certification of verification for participation in Child Abuse and Neglect Training (CANT) - NEW REQUIREMENT

    In the Commonwealth of Virginia, effective July 1, 2004, there exists a codified requirement for all teachers to participate in specified Child Abuse and Neglect Training (CANT) prior to obtaining or renewing their licenses to teach. This training, which takes about one hour to complete, is available at no charge through web-based instruction at www.vcu.edu/vissta/training/va_teachers. You are advised that completing CANT will be part of the employment process for applicants wishing to teach in any school division in Virginia. Upon completion of the training, you will need to print your certificate to use as verification of having met the requirement.

3) Secretarial/Clerical Applicants:

  1. Transcript(s) for all coursework (official transcript upon employment).

4) Bus Driver Applicants:

  1. A copy of your driving record from the past seven (7) years;
  2. A copy of your Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

* All new bus driver substitutes will be required to submit to drug/alcohol testing prior to approval.

5) Nurse Applicants:

  1. Copy of your state nursing license;
  2. Current CPR certification;
  3. Transcript(s) for all coursework (official transcript upon employment).

* If degree was granted, transcripts should include the degree granted and date.

6) Technology and Maintenance Applicants:

  1. A copy of professional certifications;
  2. Transcript(s) for all coursework (official transcript upon employment).

* If degree was granted, transcripts should include the degree granted and date.

7) Teacher Assistant Applicants:

  1. Transcript(s) for all coursework (official transcript upon employment).

* If degree was granted, transcripts should include the degree granted and date.
