How Virginia Beach City Public Schools
is Addressing
the Threat of MRSA
Recently, there has been a great deal of coverage in the media and the medical community about a form of staph infection – Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) – that does not respond to commonly used antibiotics. In response to the concerns expressed by our parents regarding this health issue, we would like to assure you that Virginia Beach City Public Schools is working closely with the Virginia Beach Health Department to take the necessary steps in our schools to prevent the spread of this infection.
To prevent the spread of infection, it is important for you to know we are doing the following in our schools:
Creating an awareness of MRSA and preventative measures among staff and students.
Continuing to promote the importance of practicing good hygiene by reminding students and staff to wash their hands often.
Ensuring all soap dispensers remain full and functioning.
Wiping down tables, desks, doors, the interior of school buses, and other surfaces with a solution to destroy and prevent the spread of MRSA.
Cleaning/disinfecting athletic mats, benches or other shared athletic equipment after each game or practice.
Referring students and staff with open wounds to the school nurse.
