Eleven-year old Rebecca VanDeven is well on her way to becoming a bilingual, global citizen. This outstanding fifth-grader is enrolled in the Foreign Language Partial Immersion Academy at Christopher Farms Elementary. Rebecca and her classmates learn math and science lessons in Spanish while language arts and social studies are taught in English. Lessons about culture and diversity are integrated throughout the curriculum.
“I like that I get to learn the language and go home and teach my family,” Rebecca said. “I also like that when I learn new words, my Spanish vocabulary gets bigger. It’s getting bigger every year,” she added.
Rebecca chose to attend the Foreign Language Partial Immersion Academy not only for the fun of learning a second language. She also believes it will be a necessary skill when she is older. “I think it will help at any job I have in the future because I can talk to anyone who speaks Spanish that comes my way,” said Rebecca.
