SOCIAL STUDIES

SOCIAL STUDIES 6 (SO2354)

Social Studies 6 (U.S. History to 1877) begins with a study of the first Americans, moving to the era of European exploration and the colonization of the New World. Students have the opportunity to study the sources of dissatisfaction that led to the American Revolution, as well as the challenges faced by the young nation in the period following that war. The course emphasizes the growth of the United States during the first half of the nineteenth century and the sectional differences underlying the Civil War. The course concludes with the examination of the political, social, and economic legacies of the Civil War and Reconstruction periods. Thinking skills are developed as students examine historical issues and events to determine the contrasts among eras, evaluate information, identify points of view, and recognize bias. Fundamental concepts in civics, economics, and geography are developed within the context of United States history.

SOCIAL STUDIES 7 (SO2356)

Social Studies 7 (U.S. History from 1877 to the Present) focuses on 20th century United States history. The course begins with a description of the United States in the 1870's, identification of key themes of earlier historical periods and concludes with a unit on the 1990s. The main emphasis of the curriculum is on the development of constitutional government and the rapid growth of the U.S. economy, along with the issues and conflicts of the 20th century. Fundamental concepts in civics, economics, and geography are further developed within the context of United States history. Thinking skills are refined through the examination of historic issues and events. Students have the opportunity to explore in depth the development of the American political system, the growth of the United States, foreign and domestic policy in the 20th century, and the role of the national government to the present day.

SOCIAL STUDIES 8 (SO21016)

Social Studies 8 (Civics and Economics ) focuses on the rights and responsibilities of citizens. The curriculum emphasizes the role and responsibilities of informed citizens in a democracy. Students explore the reasons for and development of a variety of governments and economies from both historical and contemporary viewpoints. The courses emphasizes the importance of civic awareness and involvement.

Principles of American Citizenship
Character Education Program

Virginia Beach City Public Schools began a program dealing with the characteristics of good citizenship during the 1998-1999 school year. This program is called Principles of American Citizenship and features one principle each month. The principles are responsibility, diligence, respect, kindness, honesty, trustworthiness, cooperation, self-control, and fairness. This character education program is in compliance with the Standards of Quality and 22.1-208.01.

At the middle and high school level, the SOL required content and objectives are illustrative of the character traits referenced in the Principles of American Citizenship. In addition to this, each middle and high school implements elements of the Principles of American Citizenship program within their school in a variety of ways that are site generated.
