The school division's philosophy and goals are supported by the goals of the science program of the Virginia Beach City Public Schools. They provide curriculum direction which assists students in achieving the understanding, the skills, and appreciation vital to self-fulfillment in an increasingly scientific and technological society and to continuous, lifelong learning.
The goals of the science curriculum commit the school division's human and material resources to assist each student in:
SCIENCE 6 (SC 4105)
Science 6 is an activity-based, inquiry course in which students study the life, physical, and earth sciences. Through hands-on activities, students learn about the natural and technological world, improve their inquiry skills and ability to solve problems, and develop an understanding and appreciation of the limits and possibilities of science and technology.
ADVANCED SCIENCE 6 (SC 4106)
Advanced Science 6 is a hands-on, activity based physical science course involving students in the exploration of chemistry and physics. Students will utilize experimental design to conduct small group and individual research projects related to real-world problems. Major topics of study include matter, energy, and earth systems. A variety of instructional approaches including experimental design, technology integration, and inquiry-based learning will be used to help students develop an understanding of the role of science in their lives. Each student will conduct an individual science project. Students participate in journal writing and portfolio development to document reflective thinking. This course is recommended for highly motivated students with strong mathematics and reading and writing skills.
LIFE SCIENCE 7 (SC 4116)
Life Science 7 is a laboratory-oriented program that provides students with a foundation in the biological sciences. Laboratory investigations and activities are the primary means for developing problem-solving skills and for understanding scientific concepts and principles. Students will develop inquiry and problem-solving skills through research projects. Research and decision-making skills are further developed through the investigation of local or national issues and concerns that result from the interaction of science, technology, and society.
ADVANCED SCIENCE 7 (SC 4118)
Prerequisite: Advanced Science 6
The Advanced Science 7 course is a rigorous life science program that encourages students to address real-world science issues. The instructional program incorporates technology, community resources, laboratory experimentation, and field-based activities in a rigorous curriculum designed to foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills. A major goal of this course is to encourage student-directed research. Each student will conduct an approved research project. Students participate in journal writing and portfolio development to document reflective thinking. The course is recommended for highly motivated students with exceptional work and study habits and high interest in science. Students will take the Grade 8 Science SOL test at the completion of the course.
PHYSICAL SCIENCE 8 (SC 4126)
Physical Science 8 is a laboratory-oriented program that provides students with a foundation in the physical sciences.
EARTH SCIENCE (SC 4210)
Prerequisite: Advanced Science 7
One Credit
Earth Science introduces students to the features and forces of our planet and its place in the universe. The course includes topics in astronomy, geology, meteorology, oceanography, and physical geography. Field trips, laboratory investigations, and other classroom activities permit the students to interrelate these topics and to relate their personal experiences to the larger sphere of their surroundings. Environmental concerns, energy, earth processes, and the influence of science, technology, and society are significant parts of the program. Students will take the Earth Science SOL test at the completion of the course.
