ART

The Middle School Art Program is aligned with the National Standards for Arts Education and the Virginia Standards of Learning. The middle school art program is a concept-based, sequential curriculum that integrates the disciplines of art history, art criticism, aesthetics, and art production. Central to this approach is the focus on content that is derived from a broad range of the visual arts with an emphasis on what can be learned from works of art. The middle school art program is exploratory in nature offering three courses; Art 6 and Art 7 are nine week courses and Art 8 is an eighteen-week course. These courses invite middle school students to become active participants in the world of visual art.

ART 6 (AR 9103)

Art 6 is a nine-week course, which introduces middle school students to the world of the visual arts. Students examine the importance of art in their own and other societies and identify some of the influences that art forms from the past have on art forms of the present. Art 6 includes studio skills development in drawing, painting, and sculpture.

ART 7 (AR9107)

Art 7 is a nine-week course, which provides a variety of activities in which students examine the importance of art in American culture. The course includes the study of a broad range of artistic styles, media, and ideas from past and present American culture. The students participate in aesthetics, art criticism, art history, art production, and interdisciplinary activities that promote visual literacy. Art 7 includes studio skill development in drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture.

ART 8 (AR 9106)

Art 8 is a semester course, which is designed to assist students in gaining more meaningful experiences with art. An inquiry approach provides the students with a foundation for understanding and appreciating the visual arts and their relationship to society. The course includes the study of a broad range of artistic styles, media, and ideas from past and present cultures. The students participate in aesthetics, art criticism, art history, art production, and interdisciplinary activities that promote visual literacy. Art 8 includes studio skill development in drawing, painting, sculpture, and crafts.
