Alternative Education
Princess Anne Center For Pregnant Teens

What is the Princess Anne Center?
The Princess Anne Center is a daytime high school program for pregnant students who would benefit from the smaller academic classes and additional resources related to pregnancy available through the center.

How is a student referred to the program?
The Princess Anne Center is a voluntary program designed to meet the unique needs of pregnant teens. Pregnant girls in grades 9-12 have the option of attending the center from the time of confirmation of their pregnancy until the completion of the semester in which their baby is delivered. Pregnant students in lower grades should contact Homebound Services (437-6232) for information on alternative services available.

What classes and services are offered at the Princess Anne Center?
Students in grades 9-12 may take appropriate levels of English, social studies, science (up to and including earth science and biology), math, health and physical education (including 10th grade driver education), as well as work and family studies (including parent/child development, fashion design, and foods).

A full time nurse is assigned to the Princess Anne Center. In addition to monitoring health needs and concerns of the students, she serves as a liaison between center and community agencies. Weekly resource sessions are offered to address the needs of the pregnant students.

A social worker is assigned to the Princess Anne Center and is available at any time. The social worker offers resource referrals and provides individual and group counseling to promote exploration of pregnancy and parenting issues.

Special education students receiving resource services may attend Princess Anne Center with a current Individual Education Plan (IEP) indicating the Princess Anne Center as the appropriate educational setting.

What is the referral process for Princess Anne Center?
Students should contact their home school guidance counselor. After consultation with the student and her parent/guardian, the student’s home school guidance counselor completes the Princess Anne Center Student Referral Form. A parental signature must be included on this referral form before it will be accepted by the Princess Anne Center. Referral forms are available in the student’s home school guidance office or on the VBCPS intranet. In addition to the above referral, a copy of the student’s current schedule and any grades to date, a physician’s confirmation of pregnancy including due date, and a copy of any discipline record to date must be provided. A copy of the student’s current Individualized Education Program (IEP) should be forwarded if indicated. Although students are attending classes at Princess Anne Center, they remain officially enrolled in their home schools.

How long does the referral process take?
Students may attend the center immediately upon the completion of the referral paperwork and administrative approval from both the student’s home school and the Princess Anne Center.

Is transportation provided?
Special education buses provide transportation to and from the Princess Anne Center. After enrollment in the Princess Anne Center is confirmed, the VBCPS transportation division will contact the student with pick-up and drop-off times and information. This process typically takes 3-4 working days. During this transition period, transportation is the responsibility of the student and her parent/guardian.
