Citywide Teacher of the Year

Patricia H. McGloine

2007 Citywide Teacher of the Year
Patricia H. McGloine

Congratulations to our 2007 Citywide Teacher of the Year Patricia McGloine! As an IB (International Baccalaureate) and AP (Advanced Placement) European History teacher at Princess Anne High School, McGloine is a 20-year veteran teacher, with all of her years having been spent teaching in Virginia Beach.

McGloine, according to her principal Pat Griffin, is the sort of teacher who makes more than an impact... she is a "great teacher who makes a difference." She works hard to maintain a student-centered classroom in which students are encouraged to think critically and analytically, to share ideas, to trace relationships and compare and contrast historical events. She doesn't simply teach, but rather engages her students in the study of history, making it both interesting and meaningful.

McGloine encourages learning through motivation making subjects come alive through the use of differentiated teaching techniques. In McGloine's class, students learn by doing. From role playing in a "French Salon" setting, where intellectuals and bluestockings engage in discourse relating to politics and philosophy of the day, to debating whether or not the Reign of Terror (during the French Revolution) was justified through a historical context, students become a part of the lesson, learning through doing, collaborating, and sharing ideas. Through all these experiences, students gain increasing motivation, which is all part of their teacher's "master plan!"

McGloine's service to students and school doesn't end with the classroom. She serves on countless committees, councils, and is a coach, mentor, and advisor to students and staff alike. Currently, she is the assistant student activities coordinator, Lead Teacher for IB, and a Table Leader and Examiner for the AP European Exams. In addition, she makes time to present at conference and training events.

For Pat McGloine, teaching is an art form that "REQUIRES people who are passionate about their subject and willing to adapt their lessons to the learning styles, abilities, chemistry, previous knowledge, and even the daily moods of their classes."
