I believe that Speech Pathologists provide people with the most basic human skill of all: the ability to communicate ideas and feelings in a safe and supportive atmosphere.  While I was in high school, my youngest brother needed a speech coach.  Being the eldest sibling, I was tapped and became hooked on my profession.  I am a Speech Pathologist for firsts: sounds, words, written or read aloud sentences, first successes!
