River Star School Achievements for 2009-2010
The Elizabeth River Project selected the River Star School Achievements for the 2009-2010 school year. Schools are selected as a River Star through demonstrated involvement in a project that has a positive impact on the Elizabeth River. Projects include: oyster gardens, butterfly gardens, wildflower meadows, litter clean-ups, eco-art, recycling, water quality, identified wildlife and flora and more. Students in school may also mentor students in other schools and groups and take projects from the classroom into the community. The 2009-2010 River Star Schools include:
Model Level Schools are recognized for going above and beyond; participating more than one year; mentoring and implementing conservation; and restoration and/or habitat enhancement projects.

Since September 2008, the school division has diverted 4,531 tons from the waste stream. This is equivalent to saving:
- 77,023 trees
- 1,721,772 gallons of oil
- 13,593 cubic yards of landfill space
- 18 million kilowatts of energy (enough to power 2,265 homes for one year)
- 31,716,860 gallons of water
