Twenty one schools in the division are recipients of the Pearl School Award for the 2008-2009 school year. To earn the Pearl School Award, elementary, middle, and high schools must accumulate points by carrying out educational and service programs in their schools that teach environmental concepts. The Pearl School Program, developed by the environmental group Lynnhaven River NOW, acknowledges and encourages good environmental education programs in public and private schools. Lynnhaven River NOW supports the premise that teachers are important and effective spokespeople for environmental education and students play a critical role in our restoration and stewardship efforts. Through community partnerships and education, Lynnhaven River Now works to reduce pollutants in the legendary Lynnhaven River and restore critical habitat including oyster reefs and salt marsh areas.
