The Pearl School Award
The Pearl School Program was developed by the environmental group Lynnhaven River NOW to acknowledge and encourage good environmental education programs in our schools. Lynnhaven River NOW supports the premise that teachers are important and effective spokespeople for environmental education and students play a critical role in our restoration and stewardship efforts. To earn the Pearl School Award, elementary, middle and high schools must accumulate points through a variety of projects.

2009-2010 Pearl School Award Recipients
Twenty seven schools in the division are recipients of the Pearl School Award for the 2009-2010 school year. To earn the Pearl School Award, elementary, middle, and high schools must accumulate points by carrying out educational and service programs in their schools that teach environmental concepts. The Pearl School Program, developed by the environmental group Lynnhaven River NOW, acknowledges and encourages good environmental education programs in public and private schools. Lynnhaven River NOW supports the premise that teachers are important and effective spokespeople for environmental education and students play a critical role in our restoration and stewardship efforts. Through community partnerships and education, Lynnhaven River Now works to reduce pollutants in the legendary Lynnhaven River and restore critical habitat including oyster reefs and salt marsh areas.

Since September 2008, the school division has diverted 4,531 tons from the waste stream. This is equivalent to saving:
- 77,023 trees
- 1,721,772 gallons of oil
- 13,593 cubic yards of landfill space
- 18 million kilowatts of energy (enough to power 2,265 homes for one year)
- 31,716,860 gallons of water
